Marriage....great example of how I got discipled!

Written by Skipp Phipps
One of the things that I think often gets over looked in marriage is the chance we have to disciple each other. Let me give you a quick story on how my wife helped disciple me recently....

The other night my wife and I were running errands and decided to stop downtown and have a nice dinner. We did and had a wonderful time. When we returned to our car about 8:00......Both rear windows had been broken out...glass was everywhere. Immediately witnesses came up to us and described that a man had just vandalized our car. Literally minutes before we arrived on the scene. There was even a trail of blood leading away from the scene since the guy used his fist to do the damage. After filing a report and speaking to a couple officers that showed up....we pulled out and headed home.

I didn't want to head home....I wanted to lead the "Chase" to find this guy who was obviously still in the area. My wife's immediate response was...."we need to pray for this guy...he is obviously troubled to do a random act like this.....and maybe, there is no one else in the world praying for him...so God let him vandalize our car so that now...someone would be praying for his salvation". So we prayed for him that night....the cops called and said they found him in a church parking lot....just sitting there. Maybe our prayers led him to the church parking lot...maybe he is seeking God now...I don't know...

But my wife's response taught me..disciple me in having a "Holy Spirit led life" rather than an emotional led life. It was my wife's openness to the Holy Spirit that led that response. Her or I in our natural would not have that response...but because she took a moment to listen to the Holy Spirit above her natural...she heard and took a very different course of action.
The truth is....would I give up my windows so a guy could get saved?  Well if someone asked me like that...I would say "heck ya".  But I wasn't going to say that with my actions.  God truly does work all things together for the good of those who love him.  God can make purpose out of destruction.

I love my wife, and I truly believe I have been given one of God's best...I am so thankful that God can use marriage not only to spread the gospel...but to disciple us as well....

Love ya...
