In the last few verses of Ephesians 5...God gives us the "game plan" for marriage. Here are a few highlights from this passage....
Both husbands and wives are told to fulfill their roles either "unto Jesus"...or "Like Jesus". But hey...Jesus wasn't married? How can we do that?
Wives are told to "submit" as unto the Lord to their husbands....Yep that's right..I used the S word. Husbands are told to sacrifice like Jesus for their wives....yep...another S word.
Jesus is the example for wives and husbands alike. Wives....serve your husband like Jesus serves. Submit and love..carry a burden for your husband like Jesus does.
Husbands....sacrifice and love and serve your wives like Jesus did. Give your life for her...make her your lifes work.
How we function for each other has nothing to do with whether our spouse deserves the behaviour. Jesus loved and died for us when we were yet sinners. The gospel is all about Jesus giving his life for ours. It is about "loving your neighbor as yourself". God's call to the christian in marriage is no different.....give your life for another. Wives...give your life for your husband. Husbands give your life for your wife. In other words.....BE LIKE JESUS!
Together....you and your spouse can paint the most powerful picture of the GOSPEL to the world. Our marriages should be living breathing examples of JESUS to the world. When they are not....all our other attempts to preach seem like lifeless words.
In times when my marriage has suffered.....I ask myself...am I preaching the gospel through the way I love my wife? Am I initiating like Jesus did? Am i leading like a servant leader like Jesus did? If I am not....then I look to Jesus for my example and for my help.
None of us our perfect....so we must also be patient, long suffering...forgiving each other...just like Jesus.
This statement rings true even in marriage......whatever the problem....Jesus is always the answer.
